Work is currently underway to enhance 19th Avenue by installing greenery in the medians. The Department of Public Works (DPW) is expected to complete the project in March 2013 at the latest.
The project is part of efforts to make 19th Avenue a safer transportation corridor for both drivers and pedestrians. In recent years, the City has added pedestrian safety countdown signals at 10 intersections along 19th Avenue; changed the timing of traffic signal lights; and installed more visible traffic lights. The City also worked with state officials to lower the speed limit from 35mph to 30mph and create a Double Fine Zone along 19th Avenue.
Upcoming plans include additional upgrades to traffic signals and the extension of sidewalks at intersections to make crossing easier for pedestrians.
While motorists may experience traffic delays during construction, DPW hopes to minimize traffic disruptions by working on two blocks of 19th Avenue at a time and by closing off no more than one lane of traffic in each direction between 9:00am and 3:00pm (Mondays through Thursdays) and 9:00am – 2:00pm on Fridays.
The median greening project is a partnership between DPW, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), the San Francisco County Transportation Authority (SFCTA), and the California Department of Transportation.
