City considering changes to commercial zoning in the Outer Sunset District

District 4 Supervisor Carmen Chu has asked the city to consider a plan to zone three “named” commercial districts into the Outer Sunset.

“Named” districts such as West Portal, Inner Clement, Sacramento, Broadway, Castro, etc. enjoy tailored regulations that help create unique character and quality of life in those neighborhoods for residents and merchants.

Meanwhile, District Four is the only area in the city that currently has no “named” commercial districts, instead falling under the “General Neighborhood Commercial District” zone, which is regulated in the same manner citywide.
Chu’s plan calls for establishing three named districts within the Outer Sunset, as well as amendments to allow catering, wholesaling, manufacturing and processing as an accessory use for up to two-thirds of the gross floor area, and to remove horsepower limitations.

These named districts should enable merchants and residents to develop criteria for the type of businesses they want to attract, develop controls to allow for growth compatible with the existing neighborhoods, and encourage and enhance pedestrian accessibility.
